10 symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

4. Bloating and flatulence

Bloating is an entirely subjective sensation, and is caused by a buildup of gas in the intestines. Almost all patients with IBS have increased gas in their intestines, but not all report having problems. Bloating is caused by an imbalance in gut flora and increased fermentation in the guts. While the food passes through the gut, the bacteria ferments the sugar from the food (both “good” and “bad” gut bacteria) which causes the release and buildup of gases.
Some patients complain of passing gas too much, while others describe that they feel like “their stomach is inflated”.
